Wait and see

A lot of the leaders I’m speaking to are taking a “wait and see” approach to business.

They tell me there’s too much uncertainty to make plans right now.

And that’s when I get to challenge their thinking.

Good leaders don’t let uncertainty stop them from taking action.

They know the difference between uncertain environments and chaotic environments.

They move swiftly in chaos to stop the bleeding and bring their organization back to a place where they can manage.

You can absolutely manage and lead well in uncertain environments.

There is no roadmap for this, but as a leader, you get to chart new territory in uncertain times.

Doc was right in Back to the Future III: “the future hasn’t been written yet.”

You get to chart a new course using the tools available to you.

Here are 5 tools you can begin to use immediately:

  1. Curiosity.

Ask a powerful question you and your teams can live into. Get curious about what you already know but have taken for granted. This is valuable information.

  2. Creativity.

Who are those around you that you can innovate with? Entrenched thinking won’t serve you in uncertain times. Surround yourself with others who can stimulate new thinking.

  3. Your Secrets to Success.

Identify the things that you have been doing your whole life that make you successful.

  4. Your Inner Compass.

Get in touch with your values, your desires, and the activities that energize you. These are meant to guide you.

  5. A willingness to run an experiment.

Uncertain environments don’t have all the information available at once. The best you can do is run small experiments and allow for the next step to emerge. It will, and you will take it.

Stop waiting to see what will happen.

Start using the tools available to you and get into action.

Your future is yours to create.

Love,

Audrey
