When you have a career decision to make, it can feel like the stakes are high.
With unlimited information available at our fingertips and analytical support tools at the ready, it might seem like decision-making should be easy.
But the very reason that a decision can feel hard is that one option doesn’t obviously outweigh the other.
Both can have merit and upsides, and both can have drawbacks.
So you write out the pro/con list, you talk to trusted friends, and even then you can be stuck.
You have put so much thought and consideration into the decision, and you’re veering into the realm of overthinking.
But, here’s a little secret.
You can’t think your way out of overthinking.
Your mind can feel murky, and rather than clarity, you just feel confusion.
But just like murky water, if you were to let it stand still long enough, the sediment would settle to the bottom and the water would be clear again.
You mind is a lot like a glass of murky water.
If you can be still long enough, without forcing it, a thought will eventually emerge that will have so much clarity and simplicity it will feel like somehow it’s been with you all along, just waiting to emerge.
This is because you have an inner compass that is meant to guide you.
Often, though, your thinking gets in the way of your inner compass revealing itself.
So the next time you face a big decision, instead of trying to gather all the necessary information, try getting still.
Be still long enough that the sediment can settle, and see what happens next.
Love,
Audrey
